Crafting Legacy through Sustainable Design: The Story of Jithin Sudhakrishnan and Sargasala Design

In a world racing toward urbanization, where glass towers often replace timeless traditions, there are a few who dare to design differently. Among them stands Jithin Sudhakrishnan, a visionary architect, conservationist, and entrepreneur who has committed his life’s work to preserving the architectural soul of Kerala while integrating modern engineering practices. His company, Sargasala Design, is not just a design studio—it is a movement toward sustainable living, responsible design, and architectural storytelling rooted in heritage.

From Passion to Purpose: The Birth of a Vision

The seeds of Sargasala Design were sown in the year 2000, when Jithin, driven by a deep-rooted love for traditional architecture and an unshakeable desire for independence, took his first entrepreneurial steps. With a foundation in Civil Engineering and Structural Engineering, and a rare academic combination including a Diploma in Traditional Architecture from the prestigious Vasthuvidya Gurukulam, he embarked on a journey that blended science with soul.

Armed with degrees from institutions like Cochin University of Science and Technology and APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University, Jithin began carving his niche in a competitive field. While others ran toward high-rise modernity, he delved deeper into the vernacular, the sustainable, and the culturally resonant.

His early career saw stints at leading engineering and infrastructure firms like FEDO, FACT, Kochi Refineries, Galfar Engineering & Contracting, and Hyder Consulting Middle East, allowing him to absorb global best practices while staying grounded in Kerala’s ethos.

The Philosophy Behind the Practice

Sargasala Design’s core mission is clear: to create architecture that is sustainable, culturally rooted, and socially impactful. What sets the firm apart is its dedication to the conservation of heritage buildings, the integration of eco-friendly methods, and the drive to make architecture accessible to all, not just the elite.

Jithin’s work is guided by the belief that “Architecture must serve people, culture, and the environment in equal measure.” That belief is reflected in every line he draws and every structure he shapes.

Today, Sargasala employs 8 engineers, 85 skilled workers, and indirectly supports over 200 families—a powerful testament to the firm’s socioeconomic impact.

Transforming Spaces, Enriching Lives

The portfolio of Sargasala Design is both diverse and distinguished. Among the most notable is their contribution to the Muziris Heritage Project, one of India’s largest cultural conservation initiatives supported by UNESCO. Here, Jithin’s expertise helped breathe new life into structures that narrate the 3,000-year-old story of Kerala’s rich trading and cultural past.

Other key projects include:

  • Kodungallur Temple Museum: A living testament to Kerala’s temple architecture.
  • Neelambari Eco-Tourism Project: A celebration of nature, tradition, and sustainable hospitality.
  • Mall of Guruvayur: A fusion of commercial functionality and traditional aesthetics.
  • Paliyam Ottupura and Vaikom Auditorium: Community spaces designed with reverence for cultural narratives.

Sargasala also delivers architectural services for major government undertakings such as the LPG Import Terminal in Kochi, the Kerala Judicial Academy, and numerous works for the Guruvayur Devaswom.

Beyond government and commercial projects, the firm has completed hundreds of residential villas, always honoring the client’s individuality while upholding the principles of passive design and natural materials.

Designing with Heart: Projects that Inspire

When asked which projects lie closest to his heart, Jithin doesn’t hesitate.

One is a minimalistic farmhouse in Palakkad, just 500 square feet spread across two floors. Constructed using laterite walls, the house embodies efficiency and elegance, proving that true comfort doesn’t require opulence.

The second is the Neelambari Eco-Tourism Project in Arattupuzha, Thrissur. Here, architecture becomes a vehicle for cultural immersion. Built entirely using locally sourced materials, the resort includes a Koothambalam (traditional stage), an artificial pond for water conservation, and even a pathway for elephant processions. Every cottage is designed in luxury but radiates the warmth and authenticity of traditional Kerala style. Importantly, staff are drawn from underprivileged communities, making it a beacon of inclusive growth.

The Power of Sustainable and Ethical Design

A recognized Building Energy Efficiency Expert empanelled by the Energy Management Centre, Kerala, Jithin is a staunch advocate for sustainable construction. His design philosophy aligns with India’s ambitious Net Zero Carbon Emission goal by 2070.

He believes green architecture is no longer optional. While India still lacks a comprehensive green building code, Jithin points out the promising drafts of the Energy Conservation and Sustainable Building Code (2024) and Eco-Niwas Samhita (ENS – 2024) as positive signs.

“We must promote passive design strategies, local materials, and reduce our dependence on energy-intensive systems,” he says. For him, sustainability is not just a checklist—it is an ethical obligation.

Leadership Beyond Business

Jithin’s influence extends well beyond blueprints and buildings. He is the State Secretary of LENSFED, a 25-year-old trade union of 15,000 licensed civil engineers in Kerala. Under his leadership, the organization has launched a Skill Park, aimed at tackling the shortage of skilled engineers and laborers in the industry—a concern magnified post-COVID-19.

He also serves as a jury member for the ICI–Ultratech Awards (2023 and 2025), and was recently honored with the Vanitha Veedu Engineers Award 2025 for his commitment to green construction techniques.

Struggles, Setbacks, and the Spirit of Resilience

Like any entrepreneur, Jithin’s journey has not been without struggle. Starting out, the greatest challenge was securing funds and building credibility in a market that often equated tradition with outdatedness. His determination, however, turned these hurdles into stepping stones.

The COVID-19 pandemic presented unforeseen trials. Projects stalled. The rapid digital shift in operations and communication caught the team off-guard. Yet, rather than despair, Jithin chose to adapt—upgrading systems, upskilling teams, and reimagining workflows for a digital age.

“I learned that adaptability is as important as expertise,” he reflects.

A Human-Centric Approach

What truly sets Jithin apart is his openness, approachability, and empathy. He believes in co-creation with clients, where the architect is not a distant expert, but a partner in realizing dreams.

His strength lies in listening—understanding client psychology, their lifestyle, values, and emotional aspirations, then translating those into built forms that inspire. Transparency in every stage of work has earned him trust, repeat clients, and a strong word-of-mouth network.

The Future is Now

As Sargasala Design steps into its next chapter, the goals are bold yet grounded:

  • Break conventional design barriers using alternate and affordable technologies.
  • Incorporate smart and intelligent building systems with energy-saving features like occupancy sensors and efficient HVACs.
  • Continue promoting heritage conservation alongside AI-driven design simplification.

Jithin is optimistic: “The future lies in merging technology with tradition—where the home is intelligent, but the soul remains timeless.”

Lessons for the Next Generation

For budding architects and designers, Jithin has a simple yet profound message:

  • Promote ethical and sustainable architecture.
  • Never ignore the basics of passive design.
  • Encourage disaster-resilient and long-lasting structures.
  • Use AI and modern tools to enhance, not replace, creativity.
  • Stay humble, keep learning, and always design with a purpose.

Inspired by Greatness

Jithin draws inspiration from legends like Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam and Dr. E. Sreedharan, citing their vision, humility, and dedication as qualities he strives to embody.

His work—like theirs—is deeply mission-driven, aiming not just to construct, but to transform lives, communities, and consciousness through design.

In an age where architecture often races toward the future, Jithin Sudhakrishnan and Sargasala Design choose to carry the past with them—reviving its wisdom, sustaining its values, and reimagining it for tomorrow. This is not just a story of buildings—it is a story of culture, courage, and commitment.
